In most cases, these temp files should only exist for a few hours. If the file has not been modified for more than 2 hours, then almost certainly the file can be removed, as the maps typically reset in 2 hours. If you have /var/tmp/cftmp file several days old, almost certainly they are safe to remove. I'm not exactly sure what tmpwatch does, but this is just some notes on what crossfire uses those files for.
