It is not useful when you wouldn't normally survive a situation.  But
it's genuinely useful to protect you from small lag or a small mistake
because it lets you survive twice as long.  I'm using it whenever I
can, provided that I don't need a different amulet for its protections
or special properties.  IMHO it's already worthwhile wearing it if it
is saving your valuable expirience points every other time.

Note that from this point of view, 50% protection is also a lot,
because it also lets you survive twice as long.  But you're more
tempted to plan using up this extra time because you wouldn't lose a
rare amulet of lifesaving.
