First of all, the main reason for the splash is to show that you killed something, the sudden appearence of a pile of body parts and treasure shows that you killed something just as well. The splash of blood just adds to the overall effect. It doesn't really matter what is on top. Second, after watching too many violent movies, people expect the blood stain to be on the ground. Blood is a fluid after all, and will dribble to the ground sooner or later. So, after killing something, you will see one of two things. A blood stain by itself, or a bloody pile of items and body parts. After picking up all the items and parts, the blood stain will remain on the floor.
