-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Well some player may discuss real life thing on a 'tell' basis, like other people use irc private chats to do this. You may argue the tell command is not easy to use and so is not really used. May change in future (the sdl client should provide a chat area based on tell / shout / say commands). One easy way i see to spy while taking care of privacy is this one: 1) Have server log **every** attempt to spy a player on a file (server owner is responsible for checking this file on a regular basis for dm abuses) 2) Have a policy amongst the dms which says a player can only be spyed by a dm (don't care which dm, if a player is under investigation, any dm online at the moment of login may be able to spy him) if at least 3 dms agree this player need spying. Perhaps also define policy for the 'need spying'. 3) Have an investigation file containing name of players under investigations. This file should contain name of player and for each of the 3 dms who approved the investingation, a comment on the reason of investigation. The dms who allowed the investigation (probably with a command like 'vote spying playername reason') shouldn't be allowed to do the investigation themself (this prevent abuses, though we should thrust the dms, at least a little bit ;) 4) at any time, any dm who approved the investigation can unapprove it. The investigation will then end and track will be kept of who approved the investigation and for what reason. 5) When an investigation end, have the player notified automatically he had been under investigation, have him shown the name of the 3 dms who approved the investigation and perhaps also the name of dm who spyed him. This way spying is not a common thing to do and can't be done unnotified. Of course, the number of '3' dms for approval could be configured so small servers don't need a pack of fake dm to do the job and big servers could need more dms for approval. One can make the case that if you were a police officer and had to tell someone if they were under surveillance, you'd never actually catch them doing anything (or they are really stupid criminals). One can make the same case for crossfire - if there is a report of abuse, the DM may want to check it out, and not notify the player involved. Because if the player suddenly got a notice 'you are under surveillance', of course that player is going to stop doing whatever abusive actions. I personally find it hard to envision what one would do in crossfire that is so secretive. I could see things like private messages perhaps - even to the extent of things like 'says', if a couple players on by themselves on a map and are thinking of having a private conversation. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAuvMoHHGOa1Q2wXwRAsnBAJ43YqXzMkYNl5wGcAZ+sddTTbLg9ACfbSsD xNjszxGZuXQidQsnZxttkOk= =c9xu -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- _______________________________________________ crossfire-devel mailing list crossfire-devel at lists.real-time.com https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/crossfire-devel
