From leaf at real-time.com Tue Nov 19 14:46:52 2024 From: leaf at real-time.com (Rick Tanner) Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2024 14:46:52 -0600 Subject: [crossfire] Metalforge server RC v1.12.0 EoL (approx: Jan-2025) Message-ID: <2ace2df4-31e9-4d68-98f5-9fb2456fa19e@real-time.com> **Metalforge Server RC v1.12.0 Update** **September 2003 – January 2025** The current Metalforge Crossfire Server is scheduled to go offline around January 2025. Changes in hosting requirements have made it impossible to continue running the server in its current form. The v1.12.0 code base depends on outdated packages and an operating system version that no longer meets the minimum requirements of the updated hosting architecture. Furthermore, new hosting policies prohibit the use of these older software components. I am currently exploring the possibility of migrating existing player files to a new server. However, transitioning to the latest Trunk development code base will introduce the following changes: - **Guilds**: All guilds will be purged and reset. - **Skills and Experience Levels**: Players will lose a significant amount of experience and levels (the exact amount is yet to be determined). - **Apartments**: Some apartment maps may experience issues. Updates to movement code and the use of outdated archetypes could result in tiles blocking player movement (e.g., grates that previously allowed movement may now block it). These issues will need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. These compatibility issues have been documented on the website: http://www.metalforge.net/compatibility/index.html) Further updates will be posted as progress is made or in response to questions here. - Rick Tanner leaf at real-time.com From ruben at mrbrklyn.com Tue Nov 19 15:29:09 2024 From: ruben at mrbrklyn.com (Ruben Safir) Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2024 16:29:09 -0500 Subject: [crossfire] Metalforge server RC v1.12.0 EoL (approx: Jan-2025) In-Reply-To: <2ace2df4-31e9-4d68-98f5-9fb2456fa19e@real-time.com> References: <2ace2df4-31e9-4d68-98f5-9fb2456fa19e@real-time.com> Message-ID: <20241119212908.GA8289@www2.mrbrklyn.com> Thanks for the decades of dedicated service! Lesson learned - the approach should have been, "Any chance the RC v1.12.0 code base could get some updates to run on a modern or current OS?" Because, that happened via the Discord/IRC channel discussion. The 1.12 code branch received such updates. https://sourceforge.net/p/crossfire/crossfire-server/ci/1.12/tree/ Over the next couple of weeks, that code base will be tested. Assuming all goes well, then the Metalforge server will continue and the player files and maps will be migrated to the new server host. Updates will be posted to this email thread. - Rick Tanner leaf at real-time.com
