I don't really have anything to add to what AV said. 1.0 is meant to be a stable version, with lots of development planned for version 2.0 and beyond. Its unclear how many 1.0 derived versions there may be, as many of the things to do for 2.0 will make it incompatible with older versions (at least with the client, and their may be other potential changes that only have backward compatiblity for some brief amount of time). I believe AV already answered the unique items question. The only way the server expects to find a unique items file is if it actually finds the file in the directory - it isn't recorded anyplace else really that the file exists (the one exception to this is the apartments, where a player may save on the map, in which case that unique map is saved in the players save file, but the server should still be able to deal with that file not existing).
