GTK is only used as a base for gnome. Gnome actually has its own set of
widgets all built on top of gtk with lots of nifty features, like tear
away menu bars and stuff. GTK native code works fine on Gnome, just doesn't
take advantage of gnome. Gnome also has an opengl canvas which could be
used for some interesting effects maybe.

I believe gnome is dropping imlib too.. Or maybe that was just enlightenment.
I've heard nothing good about imlib in general though.
