      I attempted to use a newly built gcfclient against a newly built server..

      I enabled the smoothing code.  not happy things resulted:

Fixed the bug. It appeared when smoothing was activated and not images cache, 
which led to the client trying to draw the pixmap zero, which is a 
transparent one when cache is activated but a null pointer when cache is not. 
Corrected this so never tries to draw the pixmap 0
