Thanks very much for your useful info.

It turns out that the versions of automake/autoconf are too old to 
correctly rebuild configure for crossfire.  Simply editing the top level 
Makefile to omit crossedit, did the trick.

IMO, this is a bug however, because the configure script detects that no 
X libs are available, and should therefore disable building of crossedit.
