You are assuming that the lanterns use oil or some such flammable substance, but actually they work just like the streetlights in the cities, and are powered by magic. If they used a flammable oil they might be used a weapons or something equally dangerous. You wouldn't want people throwing around flasks of flaming oil or tossing their lanterns into a room now would you? Thankfully, the modern day lantern (or streetlight) is powered by a tiny enchanted glowcrystal. The problem of course is that eventualy the glowcrystal becomes used up and must be replaced and of course, a lantern crystal runs out faster than a street light crystal since they are much smaller. Since most of the cost of a lantern is the price of the glowcrystal, it is more cost effective for the merchant to simply supply new lanterns than provide a service to replace the crystal. By the way, if you think lanterns are expensive, you should see the bill charged by the various magicians guilds for supplying the larger streetlight grade glowcrystals to the city of Navar... It is rumoured that there was a magician from Port Joseph who constructed a rechargable glowcystal. This is uncomfirmed however and the man has since mysteriously vanished. The Port Joseph Wizards local 233, the first and only group to have had a demonstration of his invention and reputedly the last people to have seen him, is quoted as saying, 'it was a fraud, a fake, it never happened and furthermore no one saw anything unusual later that evening.' ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Rightnour" < root at garbled.net > To: < crossfire-devel at lists.real-time.com > Sent: Monday, May 12, 2003 1:09 PM Subject: RE: [CF-Devel] lanterns unlock/fuel > > On 12-May-03 Bernhard Kuemel wrote: > > So I kept my (bright) lantern lit so it would not unlock and for a > > long time I thought it would burn forever.
