Hum, are you suggesting something like before the choice, tell something like 
'for total newbies, try this, and that'?

The trouble is that it really depends on what the player wants to play.
One handed weapon good? Yes, if you play warrior.
Magic good? Yes, if you play sorcerer.
This race good? Yes, for that class.
The list goes on.

So yes, i think it's almost required to read the documentation.
If i remember, there is something on the web site explaining the different 
choices for creating a player: races, classes, stats, and such.
