I find that the more I look around on the "wasteland" the more I come to recognize certain landmark features. I have managed to notice MEMORIZABLE features that I now use to get to several locations with 100% accuracy. The maps are not "random", they are static. Look at them in the map editor if you want to see that they are not all just alike and do have features one can recognize. Just don't go trying to explore the big world when it is dark. :-) That said, I do agree the big world is rather empty. If it bothers you this badly then pick a big map square out in the wilderness and put something interesting on it with the map editor. Then submit it for review. The map editor runs with Java and is not difficult to use at all. I use it all the time to examine how some maps are put together.
