I agree it is confusing, I can't stand the light grey - it is counter intuitive.  In the past I suggested making it a much darker grey.  It would be lovely to have fog of war remove all 'object' items from the display as well - just leaving landscape features, but just changing the colour to a really dark grey would get the point across anyway I think.
