another thing which would be nice, would be a variable timeout for
quests, not just that they must be completed in a certain time, but
that if they aren't something else happens (maybe another quest)

For example a farmer asks you to kill the birds eating his crops, if
you don't do so within X days farmer says that it is past harvest
time, collect up the remains of the crop to create fodder instead. -
and then instead of killing birds and getting a reward, you would 
wander around a field cutting stalks with a scythe (Ryo's transform
code) and collect the stalks. - with a suitably lessened reward
associated with it.

the obvious way to do this would be to store the start time of a quest
in a field in the item struct. - this would also allow for extra
rewards for doing something quickly or the fastest. (imagine staging a
time trial race for example....)
