It really isn't that hard you know....

an inch is the length from the end of your thumb to the first knuckle.

a barlycorn is 1/3rd of an inch.

a poppyseed is 1/4 of a barleycorn

a hand is 4 inches - this is only really used to measure horses nowadays.

a span is 9 inches.

a foot is 12 inches.

a cubit is 18 inches, or 2 spans , this has fallen out of favour as a
measuring unit in recent years owing to the collapse of the roman
empire where it was widely used.

a yard is 3 feet, or 4 spans, or 2 cubits - this is about the length
of one pace,

a fathom is 6 feet, or 2 yards - this is the length of a mans arms
outstretched, it is often used to measure depths, because of how an
anchor chain on a boat is payed out, each time the sailor grabs
another part of the chain, that is a fathom.

a rod is 16.5 feet - this is sometimes called a perch.

a chain is 11 fathoms, or 4 rods (except for the chains that aren't,
but no one really uses them anymore.)

a chain is subdivided into 100 links, each of which are about 7 inches, 2
barleycorns and 3 poppyseeds (1 poppyseed short of 2 hands),

10 chains or 40 rods make a furlong, - this is how far can be ploughed
before needing a rest.

8 furlongs make a mile

about 3 miles make a league (depending on where you are, and sometimes
the terrain and weather), which is an hours walk.

also you have an acre, which is an area of land 1 chain by one
furlong, which is the area a man can plow in a day.

See, nice and simple.

updating the maps isn't too hard, in fact the following is a diff that
does just that. (I haven't included much context here, partially for
brevity, partially because anyone playing with these maps in the
editor will probably break this diff anyway.)

I'm tempted to reduce the accuracy of some more of these, express them
in furlongs, or maybe even miles (or leagues), since I doubt anyone
seriously goes around counting the squares, the screens maybe.
