Perhaps a sign should be on the 'buy new cauldron' altar that say that it destroys everything on the square. Another alternative would be to not have it destroy the old one at all: as those cauldrons are burnable, leave the player to manually burn the old one first (making sure to have a note to tell the player that he has to do that)
