I have the same issues, on gentoo and ubuntu (stable).  Also I have
experienced an issue when resizing maps, the window does not update to
reflect the change, but it used to in the last "stable" version (which
had more memory leaks if I remember correctly).  The issue with
loading larger maps, would be with the memory allocated for runing the
editor, which can be changed with a command line option, which I don't
remember atm.
