I was even thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea if the CVS version contained full color images, like you suggest, along with a script in the top level directory, called from a makefile if configured to do so, that would convert all of the images in the tree to a single palette. As a side note, I do tend to keep my individual images saved as 8-bit pngs, simply because the file size is smaller than for 24 bit pngs.
