How about making death less painful for lower-level characters?

Currently, I believe the standard death is a 20% experience loss and one
point depletion of a random stat.

How about making it phase in to that over the course of 20 levels?

So, experience loss is the same percentage as your current level, with a
maximum of 20%.  (Whether this is your overall level or your level in that
skill is up for debate.)

Stat point depletion should be only a 5% chance at first level, increasing
to 100% at level 20.

How does that sound?
