And are you absolutely sure that you already started the local server?
Try running:

<crossfiredir>/bin/crossfire -d > /tmp/cflog 2>&1 &
<crossfiredir>/bin/cfclient -server localhost

And after the error, look at and mail us the file /tmp/cflog.
