With my GTK (1.2.10) it works already without any GTK / app modifications.
The only thing you have to do is enable wheelmouse support in X.
I looked at the code and it is a clean way how he did it, it just uses
mouse buttons 4 & 5 which are the default bindings for the wheelmouse's wheel.
(If you work with XFree 4.x.y, you have to add these lines to XF86Config-4
in the mouse section:
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
)
