I was quite active with Crossfire back in the version .93-.95 era, so some of my observations are based on very old behavior. However, having my recolections be from that time period, I can tell you that this 'fundamental change' was already made, and that there are a few maps still around that are broken because of this change. It's not beneficial to change the code back, I agree (though your idea of a teleport_on flag is very interesting). But the maps should be updated. The mana drain runes in the demonology tower in maps: /peterm/Demonology/FireMaster,WaterMaster,EarthMaster,AirMaster don't work any more. It used to be that you entered the map and the rune drained you so that you had to face the master sans-magic. Now the runes don't do anything, and a few dragonbreaths or burning hands even will blow away the master, and then you just have to mop up anything it happened to summon. These maps should be adjusted with a no-magic on the entrance and mana drain runes on the three adjoining tiles in order to put it back to the old behavior. Another map broken when this was changed was /city/misc/HallOfQuests. The teleporters drop you on magic mouth messages at the end of each quest that you never see. Another map that needs changing (for an unrelated reason) is /dragonisland/thievesden. It was made with store tiles on the floor. Makes it so you have to buy the treasure you find. Now is that cheap or what? :)
