Nope, they travel between the directors until they hit something substantial such as another player, monster, summoned pet, etc. Numerous (quantities vary...) ball or bullets can wreak havoc on the server load. Plus, they can also results in a nasty surprise - image 10 (or several dozen for that matter) magic bullets all stacked on top of each other so they appear "as one" in the animation sequence; instead of taking 10pts of damage it could be several hundred.
