The existing patch doesn't remove gtk1 support; you can still compile
both gtk1 and gtk2.

I'm not against removing gtk1 support, but I'd put the gtk2 support in
first, and remove gtk1 at least one release later, leaving us time to
smoothen any wrinkles the new code may have.  (Meaning, on the first
release the gtk compile is released but labeled as "somewhat
experimental", and people who want to live on the safe side can go with
gtk1 instead.)
