  I see no reason for the pens not to have some limited number of uses, just 
like the flint & steel.  It sounds like some adjusting to the exp rewards are 
also needed.

  But if a character has an infinite number of pens and a sufficiently large 
enough amount of time, I don't see that as being an issue related to getting 
lots of exp - that is no different than lots of other parts of the game.

  Another adjustment could be to put in some time penalty (set pl->speed_left to 
some value) on the basis it should take some real time to right scrolls.  The 
time penalty should be based somewhat on the players actual speed, as otherwise 
a fast player may not get penalized enough, where as a slow player would get 
penalized for too long.
